DYNAMICS and ORGANIZATION of Complex Systems
The Complex Systems Group: Dynamics and Organization of Complex Systems is a working group under the Department of Physics, College of Science, De La Salle University - Manila. The Group is interested in the temporal dynamics and the spatial or structural organization of complex systems in nature, in human society, and in the virtual world. The group employs the tools of physics, mathematics, and computational sciences to understand the emergence of complex behavior.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
DYNAMICS. We study the temporal evolution of complex systems across broad time scales.
ORGANIZATION. We also study the structures and spatial signatures of various complex systems.
Complexity in Nature and in the Lab: Granular materials experiments and simulations, Self-organized criticality, Earthquakes, Landslides and avalanches, Discrete models
Complex Systems in Society: Human interactions, Complex networks, Agent-based models, Discrete models, Game theory
Urban Studies: Growth and development, Data mining, Geographical information systems (GIS), Spatial metrics
PEOPLE
Dr. Rene C. Batac is an Associate Professor of Physics from the Department of Physics, College of Science, De La Salle University (DLSU) - Manila. He is handling graduate and undergraduate courses for science, engineering, and education majors in the University. He also leads a research team on Complex Systems, conducting research on the dynamics and organization of complex systems in nature and society. His works span a broad range of topics, including natural hazards (such as landslides and earthquakes), economic and social interactions, and urban growth, among others.
Dr. Jude Maria Antenorcruz is currently a Faculty Member of the Department of Physics, College of Science, De La Salle University. He graduated with honors from the De La Salle University with a degree in B.S. Physics minor in Economics and completed his M.S. Physics and Ph.D. Physics degrees from the same department. His research work involves the measurement of the fractal nature of economic time series, scaling relations in economic data, and econophysics and complex network of economic systems as broadly defined.
ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS
Group members join national and international conferences to present their most recent research findings. We also conduct an internal seminar series and paper reading sessions where group members discuss the interesting results from various related research works. Finally, we hold weekly meetings for research topic discussions with every member. These meetings are open to interested parties by invitation (email us for online meeting credentials).
The Complex Systems Group (CSG) Virtual Coffee Sessions
The best research ideas oftentimes come out during late-night coffee sessions with friends.
The Complex Systems Group (CSG) invites everyone to its informal reading group, aptly dubbed as the CSG Virtual Coffee Sessions. This monthly event is a discussion group with members and other interested parties regarding topics of interest under the broad categories of complex systems studies and its applications. Senior members provide a short introductory presentation, highlighting the background and significance of the topic; after which, the entire group joins in with insights, critiques, and/or suggestions for possible extensions and applications to the local setting.
