Hernandez presents work in ICAPM 2025
Edward Russel Hernandez, a graduate student researcher from the Complex Systems Group, presented his work, Power-law Distributions of Urban Tree Cover, during the 2025 15th International Conference on Applied Physics and Mathematics (ICAPM) held on April 10-12, 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.
The work studied the occurrence of robust power-law statistics in the tree-covered areas in several capital regions of Southeast Asia. Using image processing on satellite imagery, the paper recovered power-law probability distributions with exponents close to 2. This result is an interesting manifestation of complex self-organization in urban space. The details of the work can be found in the accompanying publication: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.physa.2024.129779.
Hernandez is a graduating MS Applied Physics student from the Department of Physics, College of Science, De La Salle University. He has joined the Complex Systems Group during his graduate studies. The results from this presentation formed part of his MS Applied Physics thesis, which he defended last March 22, 2025.
The ICAPM is a conference that caters to the different branches of Applied Physics and Mathematics. The Complex Systems Group has been joining the conference since 2019, reporting the observed complex behavior in urban space, economic interactions, and natural phenomena.
